The people of the Bear Clan are associated with animals as a major part of their lives. There are a variety of animals and birds that are native to the region and the bear was considered the Chief of all the animals that lived on the land by the Okanagan Nation. In the history of Vernon, horse breeding and trading along with cattle ranching was one of the first occupations that brought permanent settlers to the region.
