Project
The City of Vernon is the urban centre in a rural landscape consisting of agricultural properties and a transportation hub where highways meet. It is set among lakes and forested areas with foothills that build up to Silver Star mountain in the north east. (See City of Vernon page)
The profile of Vernon on the internet reflects the importance of the tourist and agricultural industries to the city. However, much of the personality that makes Vernon unique and attractive is not found on-line. My site specific art project became this website and I conducted video interviews of individuals that I met.
Postcards From Vernon
I was in Vernon for a brief period in 2015, so the interviews and impressions that I gathered are like postcards from a place. A brief, but personal, look into a community that I can share with you on the internet.
Part Two
I require funding to complete the project.
- edit and post the video interviews
- Vernon Residents can interact with the site to send their own postcards to the internet
- create an interactive installation from the web material for a web launch event
Artist
Victoria Gibson was selected as the 2015 artist for the Fresh AIR (Artist in Residence) Program co-sponsored by Caetani Cultural Centre and The Alan Brooks Nature Centre. More about the residency on the artist’s website here.
Victoria says: I chose to create a website for this project to offer residents a non-commercial portal to send postcards to the internet. I start this site with my material, but the goal is to interest Vernon residents in telling their own stories.
I truly enjoyed my time in Vernon and look forward to returning. It is a beautiful environment to explore.
