Vernon – This Is Our Heritage book and tour guide manual<\/p><\/div>\n

I Interviewed Barbara Hartley in her Vernon home on September 23, 2015. I was introduced to Barbara because she had contributed to a book about Vernon Heritage and often conducted tours around the heritage buildings. She was a long time resident of Vernon who knew many stories about the area.<\/p>\n

Originally an operating room nurse by profession, she had come to Vernon after marrying a doctor who later, was offered a job at the Vernon hospital. Due to regulations at the hospital, two people from the same family were not allowed to be employed at the hospital. As a result, she became a home care nurse, a position she genuinely enjoyed until her retirement.<\/p>\n

During her child rearing years she learned to make Indonesian style batik from a local teacher. She was deeply involved in this practice for many years and taught others.<\/p>\n

I was amazed to learn how adventurous Barbara had been and the adventure travel she had experienced.\u00a0She told me many stories of her amazing travels, including regular trips to Burning Man, where she is known as “Lipstick Barb”.<\/p>\n
