Integrated Media Theory
Integrated Media Artist is a term I created in 2009 to describe my professional practice; that is, a
combination of visual, audio and electronic work emerging from the nexus of technology and the
arts. I was unsatisfied with the terms multimedia or mixed media because they have traditionally
been applied to visual works; arts that did not necessarily contain an audio or electronic component.

The term Integrated Media Arts covers the current trend towards increased convergence of art forms,
as production has become computer assisted and digital delivery methods more prevalent;
recognizing that in contemporary culture, live and recorded. performances are expected to engage
audiences with combined audio and visual material. Interactive installations and mixed reality
performances blur the boundaries between performers and audience members; as the distance
between video game and film, graffiti and masterpiece, algorithm and inspiration continues to narrow.

In my opinion, specialization of tasks may improve mastery of a single area and specialists remain impressive,
but the generalization inherent in Integrated Media Arts leads to the ability to push the boundaries of the
possible as a creator and producer. The generality of the categorization allows me to envision unique
projects that require long term commitment and innovative technological application to realize.

My collaborative or commissioned projects often employ me to specialize in one area of expertise.

Making a living has required a constellation of skills that keep growing and diversifying.

However, the two strands of Visual and Audio keep interweaving with technology as our arts tools merge with our computers.
